Report Finds Current Proposals Won’t Safeguard Vulnerable Persons in System for Physician-Assisted Suicide

A report released January 22, 2016 by the Canadian Association for Community Living (CACL) indicates that far more robust safeguards are needed to protect vulnerable persons in a system for physician-assisted suicide than those recommended by a Provincial/ Territorial Expert Advisory Committee. CACL’s report points to evidence from other jurisdictions, which suggests a system that relies on one or two physicians to assess a person’s vulnerability will not be able to screen out those cases where people are coerced into making the request, or are suicidal for reasons other than suffering caused by their condition. –
